The word affogato means drowned in Italian as a scoop of ice cream is literally drowned in espresso. The affogato became popular in Italy in the 1950s when ice cream production became industrialized but the combination was already popular in the late 1600s when the main ice cream flavors were coffee and chocolate.
The glassis called Sferico and was designed in 1968 by Joe Colombo.
