When the US military came to Europe during WWII they were used to drip coffee. Coming to liberate Italy they found Italian espresso way too strong and started to dilute it to make something more like the coffee they were used to. Italians started calling it an Americano.
The cup was designed in 1954 by Raymond Loewy and is called Form 2000.
