Moorea or Mo’ore’a in Tahitian is one of the volcanic island in French Polynesia. It is one of the Windward Islands, a group of islands that are in turn part of the Society Islands. It is just 17 kilometers northwest of Tahiti meaning your plane have barely taken off when it’s time to land. The name of the island is taken from a Tahitian word that means “yellow lizard”. The first western colonists and voyagers called Moorea York Island or Santo Domingo.
The first Polynesians that settled down on Moorea came around 200 CE probably coming from Tonga and Samoa.
